The Ready Player One Effect: Will VR Sales Get a Boost?

Ready Player One was recently released in cinemas across the world. It was a major studio release, directed by Steven Spielberg, based on a best selling book of the same name.

I’ll always have a permanent museum in my heart for all the best parts of the 80’s. This is a big factor in why I enjoyed Ernie Cline’s book so much.

Anamorphic Love

I grew up holding a place in my heart for many films. Films like Jaws, ET, Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Fog, Die Hard, Predator…it’s a long list. Amongst many things, one of the reasons I’m drawn to these movies is their aesthetic. For a while it was a strange, mythical ingredient that made up this aesthetic but when I got into a career in filmaking / VFX I realised that these ingredients aren’t mythical but practical.

Illustration: Birthday Poster

Recently I had the chance to do an illustration for a good friend’s birthday, so I made this retro-style movie poster that featured him as the hero. Started as pencil then scanned and coloured digitally.

Embodiment: Storytelling Evolved

Maybe a day will soon come where we can’t see the line between the story the real world. Maybe a day will soon come where we opt to reside within our virtual world and live the stories we want to.

Review: The Mummy

My dissertation was based around horror stories – why we tell tales that scare us and give us the creeps. At one point I talked about the great horror stable that was Universal Studios, back in its 30’s – 50’s heyday. Two Important VR Shorts for 2017

2017 is shaping up to be VR’s biggest and most important year yet. It comes off the back of a record breaking 2016, a year that saw around $1.8bn of funding for VR / AR companies. The figure has been steadily increasing over the last few years and one would expect 2017 to beat last year’s total.

Stereo VFX with 360° video

In earlier posts I’ve talked about my first VR experience and how it really resonated with me. One of the elements that really contributed to the impact the experience had on me was that it was CG. CG characters and worlds can be so fantastic; pulling imagery from our nightmares, creating environments and landscapes that amaze us, presenting…

No. Nope. Nein: A VR nightmare

I thought I was the chief when I was growing up. There wasn’t a horror movie I couldn’t stomach and anybody that didn’t watch them because they thought horror films were too scary were just wusses to me.

Shooting for 360° video

I believe that VR is here to stay – it’s the new medium from which we’ll consume movies, shows, music videos, brand experiences – we’ll visit historic landmarks that have been brought back to life through graphics and animation – we’ll go to far off locations and sample hotels before booking them. VR will offer us…
